■■Ararat Church, Whitchurch Common, Cardiff, hosts monthly meetings of the Cardiff and District Rhondda Society. The group, which is open to anyone originally from the Rhondda Valleys, meets on the third Wednesday of the month (except for August and December). Next meeting is today, October 17, at 10.30am when the speaker will be talking about the USA’s first Thanksgiving Service. Tel: 029 20883722.
■■ Dr Aled Eirug’s talk on Opposition to the Great War in Wales, planned by CACEC (Cardiff Adult Christian Education Centre) for today (October 17) at City URC, has had to be postponed. It will be rescheduled for later in the year. Advance tickets will be honoured on the new date.
■■Barry & Cardiff Sugarcraft club meets on the third Friday of the month, at St Mary’s Church Hall, Old Port Road, Wenvoe CF5 6AL. The next meeting is on Friday, October 19, when there is a demonstration of sugar flowers by Tony Warren. Anyone interested in sugarcraft is welcome to pop along from 7pm for tea and a chat. ■■There will be a coffee morning/ Christmas bazaar on Saturday, October 20, 10am-noon, in the Canolfan, Beulah Road, Rhiwbina, Cardiff, in aid of Marie Curie Holme Tower, Penarth. Sale of cakes, books, handmade greeting cards, crafts and gifts. Admission 50p.
■■South Wales Geologists Association hosts a lecture by Dr Claire Earlie, from Cardiff University, on Saturday, October 20, at 11am. Dr Earlie will speak on the topical subject of “Our stormy coastlines”. The meeting begins at 11am in the Wallace Building of Swansea University’s Singleton site, and refreshments will be served from about 10.15am.
