Shortlist for college campus

CARDIFF & Vale College is the process of narrowing down its options for a new multi-million pound campus.

Three of the potential sites can be revealed as:

■ Cardiff Airport.

■ Barry Waterfront.

■ Redevelopment of the current Colcot Road campus.

The college, which has facilities across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, has more than 20,000 students.

In 2015 the college opened a campus in the centre of Cardiff and last year it acquired leading Welsh training company ACT. The college provides recruits to some of South Wales’ leading employers with arrangements with the likes of SA Brain & Co, Aston Martin and GE Aviation.

A spokesperson for the college said: “Cardiff and Vale College has a longstanding aspiration and commitment to developing a new campus in the Vale of Glamorgan.

“The college is currently investigating a number of options as part of preparing a bid for funding from the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Investment Programme.

“A final decision on options, sites or funding has not yet been made and while the college is working with the Welsh Government and a range of partners to ensure exciting, state of the art facilities are in place in the Vale, it may be some time before the college can finalise its plans.”

The college already has a presence with its International Centre for Aerospace Training and an education campus is identified in Cardiff Airport’s recently published draft long-term masterplan.

The site on Barry Waterfront is located behind the Asda supermarket between Fford y Mileniwm and Hood Road.

There is the possibility of the current campus in Barry being redeveloped, however if the college opts for a move away they would be leaving a prime site that opens up a number of development opportunities.

The current campus houses a number of courses, as well as facilities for the community including The Glamorgan Suite restaurant.
