Painter Phil puts gloss on winning catch

FOR those who took their chance and ignored the weather forecaster­s, it was a productive trip for 37 of the 62 anglers who turned out for the East Region WFSA at Cold Knap and Porthkerry Park.

Just 25 anglers who ventured to the South Wales coast failed to get a bite with catches including dogfish, strap conger eels, pouting and one spotted ray.

The winner was 60-year-old painter and decorator Phil George. He weighed in 5.02 kilos, consisting of six dogfish and a spotted ray.

Phil, who fishes for the Garry Evans Match Team, was fishing the pebbles and caught all his fish on sand eel. He took home £300 donated by Treforest Tiling Ltd. plus £60 pool for heaviest bag of fish.

Close behind in second place with 4.92 kilos was fellow team member Ben Davies, from Llantwit Major.

He was also fishing the pebbles and caught 10 dogfish which earned him £200 donated by the East Region WFSA plus £60 pool for second-heaviest bag.

In third place was Anthony Wells, from Splott, who was fishing at Porthkerry Park and caught two dogfish and a strap conger reel for 3.25 kilos. He won £100 cash which was also donated by the East Region WFSA.

In fourth place was Penarth-based rod builder Dave Llewellyn, with 2.8 kilos consisting of two conger eels and a dogfish. He won a Anyfish Anywhere beachcaste­r donated by Julian Shambrook.

Fifth spot went to local builder Steve Smythe, from Cardiff, with four dogfish for 2.56 kilos.

In the junior section, first place went to 11-year-old Jack Read, who attends Willows High school, in Tremorfa, Cardiff. Son of Chris Read, who is currently leading the way in the Garry Evans points table, Jack caught two dogfish for 1.43 kilos. He won a rod and reel and was also 12th in the overall results.

Second was 10-year-old Ben Beal, from Penarth, with 0.75 kilos consisting of two silver eels and a pouting. He won a fixed spool reel.

Joint third were Finnan Williams, who won a fixed spool reel and Sion Davies both caught a single dogfish weighing 0.48 kilos. He won a headlamp and fishing cap.

Extending his lead in the Garry Evans Seamaster points is Chris Read, who finished seventh in the open and is now leading with 42 points. In second place is Cyril Cross with 29 points followed closely by Dave Llewellyn with 26 points.

This Sunday sees the biggest event in the boat-fishing calendar when the Cardiff Bay Yacht Club hold their 42nd Annual Cod Competitio­n.

Pre-booking for the event is £15 and £20 on the day. There will be an additional £1 pool in operation. Fishing times starts at 8am, all fish must be weighed back at the yacht club by 6.15pm.

Garmin and Diawa are the main sponsors where all prizes are for heaviest single cod. In the event of bad weather, the organisers will make the decision to fish the event at 6am on the morning of the match

The SWSA Club held their Saturday match at Penarth using a points-per -fish system.

First spot went to Simon Phelps with two conger eels, runner-up was Alex Jamieson with a cod and a dogfish and Dean Huggins caught a single conger eel for third place.

Their next club match will be at Cardiff Foreshore on December 29.

Newport and District sea anglers headed to the Severn Bridge for their match.

Nathan Guscott won it with a 1.22 kilo conger with Dave Leader second after catching a 0.77 kilo codling. Stephen Phillips took third with a silver eel of 0.22 kilos.

The club. s next match is on Saturday at Goldcliff (6pm-10pm).

Gwent & District fished their match in conjunctio­n with the East Region Open.

In first place was Dai Loder with two dogfish for 1.44 kilos. Second was Ian Davies with three dogfish for 1.24 kilos and third place went to Neville Evans with a single dogfish of 1.02 kilos.

This weekend’s match is at Porthkerry Park with fishing 11.30am until 4.30pm. Booking-in is at the Cwm Ciddy by 10.30am.

Penarth SAC fish the first of their Christmas competitio­ns this weekend at their local beaches and pier.

Fishing times are 5.30pm until 9.30pm, with booking-in at the pier from 4.30pm.
