WOMAN, 94, KILLED BY POLICE VAN
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED AFTER TRAGIC ACCIDENT
A 94-YEAR-OLD pedestrian who was injured when she was involved in a crash involving a police van has died in hospital.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has confirmed that an investigation has been launched after the accident in Whitchurch, Cardiff, on Saturday evening.
The woman was injured in the crash on Merthyr Road at around 5.20pm.
She was taken to hospital but it was confirmed yesterday afternoon that she had died.
An IOPC spokeswoman said: “We have begun an investigation following a road traffic incident involving a South Wales Police van and a pedestrian.
“The 94-year-old woman sustained injuries and was taken to hospital, where she has sadly since died.
“Our investigation follows a mandatory referral from South Wales Police and IOPC investigators attended the scene and the postincident procedures.”
The road was closed for several hours as investigation work was carried out.
Meanwhile, a second woman was killed after being hit by a van in the Rhondda early yesterday morning.
The incident took place at the junction of of Princess Louise Road and Oakfield Terrace at around 7.15am when a 65-year-old female pedestrian was hit by a white Nissan NV 200 van.
The road was closed until around 2pm to allow police to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
Police are asking for anyone who witnessed either accident to contact them.
