Tributes to woman killed in police van collision
THE FAMILY of a 93-year-old great-grandmother who died after being hit by a police van in Cardiff have paid tribute to her saying “she always had a smile of her face”.
Winifred Greaves - who had four children, 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren - was hit by the emergency vehicle on December 6 on Merthyr Road in Whitchurch.
She was taken to University Hospital of Wales but it was confirmed on Sunday afternoon that she had died.
The family of Mrs Greaves have now paid tribute.
Their statement reads: “Winnie was 93 years of age but retained the energy and vigour of a much younger person. “She was born in Cardiff and as a young woman worked at the Ely Paper Mill and later as a waitress at the New Continental Restaurant.
“She was married to Cliff for 52 years until he died in 1998.
“They had a daughter and three sons followed by 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren each of whom she loved dearly.
“Winnie had lots of friends and always had a smile on her face. “She had a great life and will be sadly missed.”
A spokesperson for South Wales Police said the incident has been referred to The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and Mrs Greaves’ family continue to be supported by specially-trained family liaison officers.
An IOPC spokeswoman said: “We have begun an investigation following a road traffic incident involving a South Wales Police van and a pedestrian.
“The 93-year-old woman sustained injuries and was taken to hospital where she has sadly since died.
“Our investigation follows a mandatory referral from South Wales Police and IOPC investigators attended the scene and the post-incident procedures.”
