Two women filmed breaking disabled lift in cocktail bar

TWO glamorous party-goers were caught on CCTV breaking a disabled lift as a prank goes wrong in a Cardiff cocktail bar.

The two women were in Peppermint Bar in St Mary Street on December 7 when they came across the lift at the bottom of the stairs which leads to the toilets. They were then caught trying to pull down the base of the disabled stairlift - which is usually activated with a switch - to lower it, but instead caused it to break.

The pair then dashed off and left the bar with thousands of pounds worth of damage and less-abled customers unable to access the disabled loo.

The cocktail bar owners are now urging the pair to come forward to help pay the £3,500 repair bill before the security video is sent to police.

Posting the video online, a spokesperson for Peppermint said: “The disabled platform lift is not a toy!

“Those sessions in the gym must be really paying off as you managed to snap a chunky piece of metal off it.

“That now means none of our less-able guests are able to use it to get to the disabled loo. We cannot get this repaired until early next week at the earliest and this makes us immensely sad.

“Unfortunately, this has happened once before and last time the damaged caused came with a £3,500 repair bill and meant we couldn’t allow access to wheelchair users for a little while.

“We’re an independent business and it’s quite difficult for us to just have to accept this damage, the inconvenience and the cost to repair just because for some reason you confused a grown up bar with a day at the funfair!”

Peppermint in busy St Mary Street, Cardiff, are hoping the women will do the right thing and get in contact to arrange to pay for the damage.

It warned it also has clear CCTV images of the women’s faces from other cameras. Mum-of-two Bethan Germon from Swansea has a disabled child and was furious at the prank.

She said: “What happens to the disabled people at the top of these stairs? Are they now trapped in the building? It’s completely and utterly selfish.

“If this happened to us my daughter would be trapped upstairs and potentially have to be dangerously carried down by several people.”
