Jackman departs as Dragons start search for new coach

-

BERNARD Jackman has left his post as head coach of the Dragons.

The former Ireland hooker has not been the catalyst for change that many had hoped he would be, failing to turn around the struggling Welsh region.

And less than 18 months into a three-year deal, Jackman and the Dragons have parted ways.

His first season at the helm was disastrous in terms of results but was a free-hit having not had time to recruit or really put his stamp on the region.

But, despite bringing on board a number of international talents last summer – namely the likes of Richard Hibbard and Ross Moriarty – results have not improved.

Dragons chairman David Buttress said: “I would like to place on record our gratitude to Bernard Jackman for his dedication and hard work in his role as head coach.

“Bernard has demonstrated his passion and commitment, day-in, day-out on the training field and away from first-team affairs he has been an asset in helping promote our brand and rugby development at all ages throughout the region.

“Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity to create future success on the pitch.”

Jackman added: “I would like to thank the WRU and the board for the opportunity at the Dragons and I believe that there is a bright future for the region. I am grateful to the backroom staff and the players for all their efforts.”
