Festive Fridays can keep the Bluebirds in promotion mix

-

TRETHOMAS Bluebirds have two Friday evening fixtures before Christmas to try and bolster their chances of promotion from the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division Three.

The Bluebirds host Treharris Athletic this evening at Ystrad Mynach College and a win would keep them in second spot.

The leaders Trefelin Boys and Girls Club have a plus 32 goal difference, which could be vital come the end of the season.

It’s tight at the top with four clubs, Trethomas, Trefelin, Pontyclun and Penydarren only having one loss apiece so far this term.

Trethomas have been inactive for the last two weeks since defeating Porth 3-0.

The only setback about the Porth victory was an unlucky leg break for central defender Adam Raymond, whose quality is bound to be missed.

A win tonight against mid-table Treharris would set up next Friday’s clash at Ynysygerwn, where another win could see the Bluebirds top of the nest by Christmas.

Pontyclun are just on the heels of the front two having played two games less.

Manager Barry Quinn takes his team to Chepstow tomorrow keen for action after their big game against Penydarren was called off last weekend.

Penydarren will expect to keep in touch with affairs at the top when they travel to second bottom club Ely Rangers.

In Division One, Cambrian and Clydach carried on with their remarkable season of cup football when they recorded an impressive 2-1 success last Saturday at Denbigh Town in the Welsh Cup.

Dane Williams will be pleased at a home draw in round four against Rhyl.

This evening Cambrian travel a couple of miles across the Rhondda to compete in a local derby against near rivals Ton Pentre, who put up a brave show but were eliminated from the Welsh Cup last weekend by Cardiff Met 4-1 at Ynys Park.

Second-placed Penybont host Llantwit Major tomorrow looking to climb back to the top.

The two teams drew earlier on in the season at Windmill Lane and tomorrow’s return should be entertaining at the Clemco Stadium.

Pontypridd Town will get an early chance to gain revenge over Haverfordwest County at Leckwith Stadium tomorrow.

The promotion contenders from west Wales eased past Gavin Beddard’s Ponty in the Cup last weekend 3-0 at the Bridge Meadow Stadium.

A point for Ponty would be a great improvement and a welcome addition to their league haul.

Taffs Well have a difficult away trip tomorrow when they visit Undy Athletic.

The Wellmen are currently bottom of the pile in Division One and face a team looking for another home win after defeating Llantwit Major last weekend 3-2.

Dinas Powys recorded a fantastic 2-1 away win last Saturday at top-ofthe-table Croesyceiliog in Division Two.

The Vale of Glamorgan team will hope to sustain that form tomorrow when they visit Aberbargoed Buds.

Bridgend Street are back at the Willows this weekend after suffering their first defeat in six games at Abergavenny last week.

The Splott club welcome Garden Village from Swansea.

Top game in the division could be at Cwrt y Ala, in Ely, where Caerau, in fourth place, entertain Abergavenny Town, who are currently second.

STM Sports are at Llanrumney University where they host bottom but one Llwydcoed.

■ BARRY Town carry on their challenge near the top of the Welsh Premier League this evening when they travel to Richmond Park to play Carmarthen Town.

Both teams progressed in the Welsh Cup last weekend, Barry overcoming a spirited challenge from Penybont 4-1, after extra time, and Carmarthen easing through 3-0 at Goytre United.

Gavin Chesterfield’s team are currently one point behind league leaders Connahs Quay and will start as favourites against 10th-placed Carmarthen.

Cardiff Met University are at home tonight against bottom-of-the-table Llanelli (1945).

The students have shown they are up for a top-six challenge after three excellent results in a row.

A 1-0 away win in the MG semi-final against Connahs Quay was followed by a 1-1 draw at TNS before last Saturday’s 4-1 Welsh Cup win at Ton Pentre.

The visitors were humbled in the Cup by Llangefni 1-0 last Saturday, who are two divisions below them.
