Yellow warning for gales and heavy rain

-

WEATHER forecasters have issued a yellow weather warning for wind and rain hitting South Wales today.

The warning includes Cardiff, Newport, and the Valleys.

It is predicted there could be 50mm of rain within six hours along with gales of up 60mph on what is expected to be one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

The “be aware” warning is in place from 6am to 6pm today.

In a statement, a meteorologist at the Met Office said: “Heavy rain and gales will affect parts of Northern Ireland and southwestern areas of the UK on Saturday.

“The wettest areas could see 30mm to 50mm of rain in six to 12 hours, while winds could gust to between 50mph and 60mph, especially in exposed coastal areas.

“The combination of these factors on a busy shopping weekend may add to potential disruption.” According to the Met Office you should expect spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer, while flooding of a few homes and business is possible.

It also warned that delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are “likely”, some short term loss of power and other services is possible, and some festive events may be affected by poor conditions.
