There are plenty of menu options at eateries in Cardiff for people taking part in Veganuary
THE vegan lifestyle has really taken off during the last 12 months and there are plenty of restaurants that specialise in either vegan or vegetarian food.
So if you’re looking to give Veganuary a go, it’s never been easier, especially when there are so many choices in the Welsh capital.
As vegan food goes, Cardiff has an abundance of tasty treats that are plant-based, which means that you can still eat well when you’re out and about, whether you’ve fully embraced the lifestyle or just dipping your toes in the water.
These are the delicious vegan dishes around Cardiff that you have to try...
1. A bio burger from Milgi Market
Milgi specialises in vegan food, offering a range of nourishing lunchtime dishes at its stall in the market.
A highlight is the bio burger, which is a vegan patty alongside a tasty mix of salads and sauces.

2. A “vacon double cheeseburger” at Greazy Vegan
Going vegan doesn’t mean ditching fast food.
Especially when you go to plantbased restaurant Greazy Vegan which does takes on classic fast food, like burgers, chicken and cheesy fries.
The vacon double cheese burger, for example, swaps the bacon, cheese and burger parts of a traditional version and replaces it all with vegan alternatives that still taste like you want them to. Where: 47-49 Castle Arcade, Cardiff
3. Supersoul Special from Atma
The cafe run by monks offers a wide range of vegan options. For £5.50 you can get a hearty bowl of the curry of the day, homemade dal, rice and salad. Where: Capitol Centre, Queen Street
4. Cauliflower wings from The Lazy Leek
Unfortunately it’s not open in January but as soon as it reopens, this spot will return as a haven for vegan delicacies.
The southern-fried cauliflower wings, which are drizzled in homemade buffalo sauce and served with fresh pickled cucumber and aioli, are a particular highlight.

5. Doughnuts at Blanche Bakery
Everything in this coffee shop is 100% vegan, from drinks to food so you’re bound to find something you’ll enjoy.
However, it’s the vegan doughnuts that get customers talking.

6. The new vegan sausage roll from Greggs
The high street baker has just launched a vegan sausage roll.
It’s made with a Quorn sausage and 96-layers of pastry.

7. Breakfast at Anna Loka
It can be hard to replicate a good fry up when you’re vegan – but Anna Loka does an exceptional job.
Its Cali breakfast is a massive hit and can easily fill that cooked breakfast gap you’re missing.

8. Three-bean chilli at Crumbs Kitchen
If you’re looking for wholesome, hearty food, look no further than Crumbs.
It offers a vegan three-bean chilli that’s perfect to warm you up in the winter. Where: Morgan Arcade, Cardiff
9. Paani Puri from Vegetarian Food Studio
This award-winning vegetarian and vegan restaurant has so many plantbased treats that it’s hard to pick just one.
However, the Indian street-food style snacks come highly rated – they’re crispy mini puris filled with potatoes, chick peas and sev (crunchy chickpea flour sticks) and they’re served with the chef’s special sauce. Where: Penarth Road, Cardiff
10. Scrambled tofu on toast from Cosy Club
This vegan brunch comes served with vegan bacon and a potato rosti and the tofu is scrambled with roasted tomatoes, peppers, kale, lovage pesto and tomato tapenade.
There’s also a full vegan menu available, including full breakfast.

11. A vegan sandwich from Corner Coffee
It does a range of vegan products, including a courgette-based vegan sandwich on sour dough bread.
The coffee is great too – and it does a range of alternative milks.

12. Any of the vegan starters at Chai Street
After a successful few weeks of trialling its vegan menu last year, Chai Street has brought over a lot of the favourites to the regular menu.
That includes starters such as potato fritters, onion bhajee and idli chaat.

13. Pritchard’s Dirty Vegan at Grazing Shed
It has had a vegan burger on the menu for a while, but to mark the exDirty Sanchez man’s new TV show about veganism, it has launched a new one.
Pritchard’s Dirty Vegan has a bit of a spicy kick, showing that vegan doesn’t mean bland.

14. A Kevin from Pieminister
This pie, called Kevin, is a popular choice among meat-eaters and vegans alike.
It has a filling that’s made up of mushrooms, tomatoes and red wine, with baby onions and thyme.

15. The Kernel Burger at Turtle Bay
The Caribbean restaurant has recently launched its first vegan burger, the Kernel Burger.
It’s made of sweetcorn patties, which are given a Caribbean twist with vibrant flavours and spices, roasted red peppers and sweet onion chutney.
