Modest Heather’s ‘just doing her bit’
A “DEDICATED” St John Ambulance volunteer has been rewarded with an Echo Bouquet of the Week.
Heather Ward has been volunteering with the St John Ambulance Trust since 2002, and regularly attends events as a first aider.
The mother-of-three also devotes much of her time to other community concerns, including maintaining the Caerphilly Road Concerns Facebook page and attending the local rock choir.
Heather, who works for a funeral director, said she was “surprised” to be awarded with the bouquet, modestly insisting that she has just been doing “her little bit”.
Heather volunteers to help the St John Ambulance Trust because she said she “could not stand by and watch something happen to people” and believes that “you have to get involved”.
Heather goes above and beyond to help her local community of Caerphilly Road, Heath, where she lives with her partner Ian, by starting up the Facebook page which highlights problems in the local area.
Over the years, St John Ambulance has valued Heather’s service as a firstaider at many events, be it an Ed Sheeran concert at the Principality Stadium or the Cardiff Half Marathon.
St John Ambulance Rhiwbina and Llanishen divisional secretary Sarah Liddell said: “Heather is a very valued and dedicated volunteer of Rhiwbina and Llanishen division. She is always willing to help with our first aid duties and is always a reliable and trusted member, who has a wealth of first aid knowledge and experience.”
Heather was nominated for the award by councillor for the Heath ward Lyn Hudson, who said: “She is a very active lady and volunteers for the St John Ambulance Trust. She has a zest for life and tackles everything with enthusiasm.”
