SIX people have been arrested after thousands of pounds was stolen from a cashpoint machine during an alleged ramraid in the middle of the night.

Five men and one woman, who are all from the Gwent area, are currently being questioned in police custody after the incident at the Co-op in Fox Street, Treharris, around 12.40am yesterday.

South Wales Police said it was working with neighbouring force Gwent Police as part of the investigation.

A spokesman for Co-op said: “An incident occurred at our Treharris store at around 12.40am in the early hours of this morning, where there was an attack on the community’s ATM.

“Police are investigating, and we appeal for anyone who may have seen or heard anything to come forward. While we await repairs and the outcome of assessments into the damage caused, it is too early to confirm when the store will re-open to serve the community.”

The Treharris store is closed while supermarket bosses assess the damage caused.

Last week the supermarket chain said it was starting to use fog cannons after a series of break-ins at some stores in Wales.

Criminals will be covered by a forensic spray squirted from a cannon that stays on people for five years.

It comes after similar break-ins at Prestatyn, Wrexham and Pontypool.

Anyone with information about the Treharris incident should contact police on 101 quoting reference *172101 or alternatively they can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
