Ninja sword found by litter pickers helped catch killer Burns

-

Shocking photographs have been released of the sword used in the killing of Mohamed Megherbi, and other weapons including an axe and machete found in his home.

Kane Burns struck his victim to the head with the 2ft long “ninja” sword.

The court heard Burns bought a pair of “ninja swords” from an online company called Blades UK in August 2018.

Prosecutors said the first sword, which was 2ft long, was found on January 13 by litter pickers in Pentwyn. That sword was forensically examined and found to match the victim’s DNA.

The second was recovered by police on March 8 and both had a distinctive badge on them.

Prosecutors said the fracture caused to Mr Megherbi’s skull was of the type typically inflicted by a machete, axe or cleaver.

Police also found a “large, rusty machete” and an axe when they searched Burns’ flat last November.

Meanwhile, chilling footage has emerged of the moment Burns walked into a shop and bought a mop to help dispose of evidence of his crime.

He was caught on closed-circuit television walking into B&M in Pentwyn, Cardiff, on October 10 last year, and buying a mop.

Speaking at Cardiff Crown Court, prosecutor Michael Jones QC said Burns made “every conceivable effort” to conceal the killing.

The defendant was seen on CCTV just over a week later buying paint, rollers and a shovel from B&Q.

The court also heard Burns also bought lighter fluid, petrol and matches in the days following the killing.
