■■On Friday, August 2, Penarth Aviation Society will be meeting in the Penarth Conservative Club at 7.45pm for 8pm when the speaker will be noted local historian Alan Thorne who will be talking about the part Penarth played in World War II in a talk entitled ‘A Flying Visit to Penarth 1939-1945’. During the war, Penarth was under a major Luftwaffe flight path. German bombers flying out of bases in Normandy and Brittany flew towards the River Parrett and Bridgwater in Somerset, then Penarth, en-route to targets in the Midlands. There were a number of airfields in the areas surrounding Penarth and Cardiff that no longer exist, such as Wenvoe and Pengam. ■■ South Wales Geologists Association is holding a family fossil hunting session on Penarth beach with Cindy Howells on Saturday, August 17, from 11am to 3pm. Turn up any time between 11am and 3pm for this free family geology day and meet experts who will be on hand to help with rock and fossil finding, identification, and explaining the local geology.
