■■Penarth Aviation Society will be meeting today in the Penarth Conservati­ve Club at 7.45pm for 8pm when the speaker will be noted local historian Alan Thorne who will be talking about the part Penarth played in World War II in a talk entitled ‘A Flying Visit to Penarth 1939-1945’. During the war, Penarth was under a major Luftwaffe flight path. German bombers flying out of bases in Normandy and Brittany flew towards the River Parrett and Bridgwater in Somerset, then Penarth, en-route to targets in the Midlands. There were a number of airfields in the areas surroundin­g Penarth and Cardiff that no longer exist, such as Wenvoe and Pengam. ■■Rhiwbina Ladies Probus meets at the Deri Inn, Rhiwbina, at 10.15am on Monday, August 5 (and first Monday of each month). New members welcome. Talk this meeting is on antiques by Roger Jones.
