■■Penarth Aviation Society will be meeting today in the Penarth Conservative Club at 7.45pm for 8pm when the speaker will be noted local historian Alan Thorne who will be talking about the part Penarth played in World War II in a talk entitled ‘A Flying Visit to Penarth 1939-1945’. During the war, Penarth was under a major Luftwaffe flight path. German bombers flying out of bases in Normandy and Brittany flew towards the River Parrett and Bridgwater in Somerset, then Penarth, en-route to targets in the Midlands. There were a number of airfields in the areas surrounding Penarth and Cardiff that no longer exist, such as Wenvoe and Pengam.
