Glazier Jones grabs a window of opportunit­y

THE latest event in the Garry Evans Seamaster series took place last Sunday with the Penarth Holiday Charity Open fished on the local beach and pier.

It attracted a 100-strong field and £815 was raised for the RNLI.

A total of 26 anglers troubled the scales with the hot rod being Porthcawl glazier Chris Jones, who weighed in an impressive 16lb 3oz consisting of three conger eels, one of which weighed 11lb 11oz.

He was fishing at Lavernock Point bagged the £200 first prize, donated by PSAC Set Up Displays plus £55 in pool money.

In second place was Roy Tapper, who landed a smooth hound and codling at Ranny Pool for 11lb 4oz to pick up £100 donated by Top Table Catering Hire.

In third place was Penarth SAC angler Joe DeAndrade who was fishing on the pier.

He weighed in a single conger for 7lb 15ozs and took home £50, donated by Sign Services (Wales) Ltd.

In the junior section, sponsored by Cardiff Marine Services Ltd, first place went to Welsh junior internatio­nal, 11-year-old Finnan Williams with two silver eels for 1lb 7oz.

He won a £50 tackle voucher. Runner-up was 15-year-old Owen Harding with an eel for 1lb 4oz. He won a £30 tackle voucher.

Third place went to 12-year-old Joe Brimfield, from Newbridge, with a single silver eel for 4ozs. He pocketed a £20 tackle voucher.

This Sunday sees the return of the popular Llantwit Major Open.

It’s been running for the past eight years supporting local charities.

This event is also the next of the Garry Evans Seamaster/Penn points qualifiers and in 2019 it is raising money for the Velindre Cancer Centre and dementia awareness.

The match takes place on the beaches of Llanwit Major, Boverton and St Donats. Fishing times are 1.45-6.45pm.

First prize is £250 backed up with £150 and £100 for second and third.

There’s also many more prizes donated by local companies and fishing tackle dealers.

Pre-booking for the match can be done at most local tackle dealers on Saturday and on the day in Maria’s cafe at Llanwit Major carpark from 9am. Entry for adults is £10 plus a £2 optional pool.

Junior entry is free where they will fish for their own prize list.

In addition there will be a pair section £5 per team plus the WFSA Cup for the heaviest smooth hound.

Seaview Lads SAC fished Ogmore last week and struggled to put fish on the scale.

Ada Harris was the only angler to weigh in with a smooth hound for 8lb 7oz.

Newport & District SAC fished their match at Sudbrook were it was a committee affair with treasurer Granville Thomas taking top spot with a conger eel for 4.74kg.

Second place went to secretary Tony Hart with two congers and a bass for 3.3kg.

Third place went to Dave Leader with a single conger eel for 1.38kg.

This weeks match takes place on Sunday at Severn Beach fishing 8.30am until 12.30pm.

Gwent SAC fished their match in conjunctio­n with the Penarth Holiday Open.

In first place was Neal Evans with two conger eels and a codling for 5lb 14oz.

Runner-up was Rob Evans with a single grey mullet for 1lb 1oz.

Third was Ivor Smith with two silver eels for 15ozs.

South Wales Angling community is mourning the loss of a great club stalwart in Jerry Dutton.

He was a prolific sea angler, and at Ogmore back in the 1990s, managed to catch two cod weighing 20 and 25lb in the same session.

Jerry was a member of the Elysian SAC one of the most successful South Wales clubs during the 1970s through to the new millennium.

He will be sadly missed and his funeral takes place on Saturday, August 3, at Thornhill, in Cardiff, commencing at 10.45am.
