MANOR BLACK #1
THIS gothic horror fantasy provides a welcome breather from superheroes this week.
Following the story of a family of sorcerers in crisis, it sees patriarch Roman Black nearing the end of his life. But as his wicked and corrupt children fight over who will take the reins of Manor Black, Roman adopts a young mage whom he gifts his powers to with the hope that someone good will take his place against the evil forces out to bring down his family and legacy.
This darkly humorous mini-series is from writers Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, and released by Dark Horse comics. With stunning artwork by Tyler Crook, Manor Black #1 is out now priced £3.35.
UNDER HIS EYE
ONE of the hardest watches on TV, it seems there’s no end in sight for the Handmaids.
Hulu has announced that it has ordered a fourth series of The Handmaid’s Tale, the current season of airing on Channel 4.
The announcement means the storyline has now run three series longer than its source material, Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name.
The Testaments, Atwood’s sequel to her 1985 dystopian classic, arrives in September, so there’s no telling yet how divergent the show, and the book’s stories are.
THE BOYS
MARVEL and DC take note, you have some serious competition.
Amazon has unleashed The Boys, a violent and savage take on superhero culture.
Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s blackly satirical comics, the series is set in a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame.
Sick of the cult of superhero worship, a group of vigilantes – The Boys – set out to take down the corrupt superheroes by any means possible.
Gory, divisive, and in places so silly you’ll laugh-out-loud, this is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly saturated market.
