Revealed: plan for ‘modern spacious homes for elderly’
THE first images showing how a major housing development planned in Llanedeyrn would look have been revealed.
Cardiff council wants to build 41 new older people’s apartments in a five-storey development on land at the former police station in Maelfa.
The sheltered housing scheme would be mostly one-bed but there are some two-bed apartments with private balconies. There would be communal facilities such as a health suite and activity room.
The new site, which would be next to Maelfa House, would have 18 parking spaces in total.
An application submitted on behalf of Cardiff council says: “The new development will provide modern spacious homes for older people to ensure they can live a full and active life in an accessible location. The scheme is thoughtfully designed to respond positively as residents’ needs change over time and places community well-being at its heart.”
The older people’s housing plans form part of a wider redevelopment of the Maelfa shopping centre area.
Nine new shops have been built while work to build 54 new affordable homes is under way. A new NHS Wellbeing Centre is being planned to replace the GP surgery currently within the Llanedeyrn Health Centre and offer out-patient health services.
A consultation is being held on the older people’s housing plans ahead of a formal planning application being submitted. LRM Planning is inviting comments on its website until October 29, and a public exhibition is being held at the Powerhouse Hub between 4pm and 7pm on October 23.
