In-form Jones hooks another Open success

AFTER a stormy week, the weather played ball for the Penarth SAC Open where 146 angles turned out to fish the local beach and pier.

A total of 40 anglers managed to catch fish of six different species – blonde ray, conger eel, silver eel, whiting, pouting and codling.

In first place again (he has won three out of the last four opens) was Chris Jones, from Porthcawl, with 16lb 12ozs, including a blonde ray and conger eel from Lavernock Point.

Jones, who belongs to Tata SAC, took home £500 donated by The Admiral Group PLC, plus £86 pool money.

A close second was Rhondda Valley SAC member John Griffiths, who on his first cast caught a conger eel of 14lb 3ozs fishing at the Ranny Pool. He picked up £300 donated by the host club & £57 pool money.

Third place went to Newport SAC angler Dai Loder with a conger eel for 7lb. Hew was also fishing at Laverneck Point. He won £200, donated by Set Up Displays.

Fourth place went to Porthcawl angler Andrew Withey, who fishes with the Sakuma Match team. He caught a conger eel of 4lb 10ozs, while Penarth SAC committee man Colin Boagey was fifth with a conger eel for 3lb 11ozs.

In the junior section, 10-year-old Daniel Whitecome who attends Cadaxton Junior School in Barry won with a codling for 1lb 2oz, winning a rod and reel plus the Penarth Junior Trophy. Finnal Williams was second with a silver eel of 10ozs and third was Ethan Beattie, also with a silver eel for 7ozs.

After 11 qualifying legs, the 40th Garry Evans Seamaster Final takes place in conjunctio­n with the Barry Angling Festival on the beaches of Cold Knap, Porthkerry, Rhoose & Fontagary this weekend.

First & second prizes in the Festival, which is open to all-comers is £500 & £250 respective­ly, donated by the organising body the East Region WFSA. There is also an extensive list of other prizes.

The match takes place from 11am4pm. Limits are the slipway at Cold Knap Point to the Steps at Fontagary Caravan Park. Entry fees are £10 for seniors with two optional £1 pools in operation for heaviest bag of fish and heaviest pouting.

Juniors have free entrry, with their own separate prize table. Booking-in is at most tackle shops on Saturday and on the day from 8am-10am at the Cwm Ciddy Hotel on the airport road.

Scales close at 5pm at the Rhoose Sports & Social Club.

This competitio­n is a catch and release match where fish can be weighed on digital scales in kgs only, with the fish card signed by another participat­ing angler.

For the top 20 Seamaster points qualifiers there’s a chance to become the 40th Garry Evans Seamaster Champion. All 20 anglers will fish off against each other where the winner will take the coveted Seamaster title along with a tackle vouchers for £250. Runner-up & third place will take £150 & £100 tackle vouchers respective­ly all donated by Garry Evans Fishing Tackle Centres.

The anglers who have qualified are: Dave Llewellyn 76 points, Chris Read 75, Chris Jones 61, Justin Bird 60.5, Roy Tapper 60, Lee Brimfield 56, Dai Loder 55, Joesph Gamlin 53, John Griffiths 51.5, Rhys Watts 50.5, Mike Mather 45, Cyril Cross 44, Ryan Poole 41, Chris Jenkins 39, Phil George 38, Andrew Hutchings 38, Chris Equall 36, Steve Chadwick 35, Andrew Withey 35, Colin Boagey 34.

Newport SAC fished Cardiff foreshore last week. In first place was Dave Leader with two conger eels and a codling for 5.46kg. Runner-up was club secretary Tony Hart with three conger eels for 5.12kg and third went to Rob Guscott, with two conger eels for 3.32kg. Top junior was Jamie Brimfield with a pouting for 0.32kg.

This week’s match takes place on Saturday at St Brides with booking-in at the Lighthouse pub from 4.30pm. Fishing is 5.30pm-9.30pm

Seaview Lads SAC fished their Gold Maggot low water rover match. Top spot went to Joe Gallivan with a bag of conger eels for 4lb 15oz. Runner-up was Matt Gallivan with a conger eel and pouting for 2lb 5oz. This week’s match is a low water rover in conjunctio­n with the Barry Angling Festival.

Gwent SAC fished in conjunctio­n with the Penarth Open. In first place was Dai Loder with a conger eel for 7lb. Runner-up was Neil Evans with a conger eel of 1lb 7oz and third went to Mike Mather with a conger eel of 1lb 2oz. This week’s match is in conjunctio­n with the Barry Angling Festival.
