Cardiff Met out to close gap at top of the table
CARDIFF Met University are the only South Wales-based JD Cymru Premier team in action this weekend and they travel to Park Avenue in Aberystwyth tomorrow (2.30pm).
League leaders Barry Town’s scheduled fixture at home to Penybont this evening has been cancelled due to Barry having two players from their first-team squad being selected for Paul Bodin’s Wales u-21s squad who play in Moldova this afternoon (3pm).
George Ratcliffe and Sion Spence, both loanees from Cardiff City are included and Linnets boss Gavin Chesterfield sees their selection as a massive plus for Barry and the Cymru Premier.
He said: “For our lads to be selected after performing so well for us is a credit to the players themselves, our clubs, and our league, and I hope they will do as well for Wales as they have done with us.”
Christian Edwards’ Met have the chance to use tomorrow’s game at Aberystwyth to close a gap of seven points between themselves and Barry, who currently are four points clear at the top.
A late equalizer last weekend lost the Met two points when a Joel Edwards own goal crept past goalkeeper Alex Laing to equalize an Elliot Evans goal.
Aber drew at Penybont when they conceded a 91st-minute goal last Friday. Current form says a Met win could close the gap on the top three and keep the students still undefeated in the league.
In the JD Cymru South, Pontypridd Town head to Cwmamman United tonight and a win would put Jonathan Jones’ team out of the bottom three.
The hosts are also struggling at the bottom, with only six points from nine games, so this looks a proverbial sixpointer which Ponty need to win.
Caerau Ely are beneath Ponty and Cwmamman United at the basement of the league and face Llantwit Major at Cwrt Y Ala tomorrow.
Craig Sampson and his players need to start picking up some points, especially from home games if they are to stand any chance of at least putting some pressure on the teams just above them in the table.
Game of the day in the Cymru South sees free-scoring STM Sports travel to the Rhondda to play Cambrian and Clydach.
It’s a fifth against sixth-placed battle with plenty of good goalscorers on the pitch, including Callum Bateman for STM and Sam Johnson for Cam.
Taffs Well face a difficult away fixture at Haverfordwest after their 3-1 defeat last weekend against Llanelli.
Steve Williams would welcome any point return from the Wellman’s trip to the third-placed Bluebirds.
In the Welsh League, Trethomas Bluebirds entertain Treharris Athletic in Division Two this evening at Ystrad Mynach.
In the South Wales FA Senior Cup, Penarth Town travel to Aber Wanderers, Tongwynlais welcome Llanrumney United and Docks Albion host Porth Harlequins at The Marl.
