Cunningham ‘gutted’ as scans reveal ACL injury

-

CARDIFF City full-back Greg Cunningham has revealed he is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after scans revealed he has picked up a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Irishman, who’s currently on loan at Blackburn Rovers, confirmed the news on his official Twitter account, and says he will be out for “a number of months” after picking up the injury during the 4-2 defeat at QPR.

He wrote: “Gutted to say I’ve received the results of my scan from the knee injury I sustained at the weekend and unfortunately I’ll be out for a number of months with a torn ACL.

“After taking a few days to process this, I’m now looking forward to the first stages of my recovery.”

The 28-year old has gained some admirers in the north west this season; indeed he has arguably been one of Rovers’ best performers.

His absence will be keenly felt at Ewood Park, but the news will also come as a big potential blow to boss Neil Warnock, who is currently now one injury away from a major issue at left-back.

WalesOnline understands that City placed a recall clause in his season-long loan contract at Rovers and had the option of bringing him back to the Welsh capital early should they please.

However, it seems that he is no longer a potential option.

Ahead of this season, City boss Warnock understandably afforded Cunningham the opportunity to go out and play first-team football.

When the defender was signed back in 2018, he looked to have been an extremely solid acquisition.

But Joe Bennett was irreplaceable at left-back during City’s foray in the Premier League. Warnock rightly anointed him the nailed-on first choice in that position, but it left Cunningham, who came with a brilliant reputation following his time at Preston, a little in the dark.
