A “LOVED and adored” man died in a crash which claimed the lives of two motorists on one of South Wales’ busiest roads.

A family tribute to David Peter Jones, 63, was released as police yesterday confirmed a second man had died as a result of Tuesday’s accident

The crash on the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road, involving a blue Renault Kangoo and a black Renault Megane, happened at around 4.10pm that day.

The 27-year-old driver of the Megane, who had been in a critical condition in hospital since the fatal collision, has since died at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Officers are expecting to confirm his identity in the coming days.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, Mr Jones, from Penderyn, Hirwaun – and known as Peter to his family and friends – died at the scene.

In a tribute, his family described him as “honest and hard working”.

It read: “Peter was a much loved and adored husband, brother and uncle. He was an honest, hard-working and unassuming man who would do anything for anyone.

“He loved his wife Claire, his family and friends, his dogs, his hobbies; laughter and life.

“He has been cruelly ripped away from our lives and Claire is heartbroken at his loss.”

An investigation into the deaths is being carried out on behalf of the coroner.

Both of the dead men’s families are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

Two air ambulance, police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision, which happened between Baverstocks and Hirwaun, on Tuesday afternoon.

Cynon Valley AM Vikki Howells said on Twitter: “My thoughts are with all those involved in this serious accident.”

The crash caused heavy delays in the area, with the road closed for several hours.

Officers said they would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, or the manner in which either vehicle was being driven prior to it.

Anyone with dash-cam or mobile phone footage which may assist the investigation, or anyone who left the area prior to giving their details to police, is also asked to contact the Roads Policing Unit via 101, giving reference *381713.
