BEST OF THE REST
GRAND DESIGNS: HOUSE OF THE YEAR Channel 4, 9pm
IT’S the return of the show that tours the awe-inspiring homes across the UK that make our own four walls feel pretty mundane.
From a house made of cork block that Kevin McCloud likens to a giant dart board put together like Lego, to castlelike structures and towering chimneys.
Among the incredible homes in this annual House Of The Year competition, there are some clever architectural tricks.
One couple’s bedroom is hidden behind a cupboard door – and is actually two identical rooms to solve a marital snoring problem.
Elsewhere, one woman takes inspiration from the most unlikely of places – a hotel in Luton.
On his nationwide tour of the homes, Kevin tells us to expect “exquisitely crafted boxes and homes that are breathtaking in scale and ambition”.
They are all competing to take the Royal Institute Of British Architects’ prestigious prize. But only the most inventive, sustainable and beautiful will have the foundations to rise to the occasion.
DOC MARTIN ITV, 9pm
DOC MARTIN goes a bit Midsomer Murders this week when there’s a mysterious shooting in Portwenn.
The usually gormless copper PC Penhale (John Marquez) rallies, grabs the doc (Martin Clunes) and rushes to the scene of the crime.
There they discover that a disgruntled local farmer has shot a camper who had the nerve to take some of his eggs.
You might recognise the camper, Robert, as Hollywood actor Danny Huston, star of movies Leaving Las Vegas and The Aviator.
Martin takes Robert back to the surgery to give him some stitches, but uncovers some worrying symptoms.
Meanwhile, Louisa (Caroline Catz) is wondering if she and Martin should see a fertility specialist, since he seems to be approaching the situation with all the romance of a medical experiment.
And following Ken’s death, the Crab and Lobster pub is now for sale.
Al and Bert can’t afford to buy it, so can they raise the cash?
