A SOUTH Wales venue has been named the UK’s best vegetarian and vegan restaurant at the Asian Curry Awards.

Vegetarian Food Studio, in Cardiff, fought off tough competition from around the country to be crowned the winner in their category.

The awards, which were held in the packed-out Grosvenor House, in London, celebrate the best of Asian cuisine in the UK.

The business is family-run by Neil Patel, 33, and his father, Jim Patel, 61.

Neil started cooking at the age of eight, before he went off to university in Birmingham to study catering.

Jim said: “This award means a great deal to us. This is very special award as it is the only one given out to the best vegetarian and vegan restaurant.”

Neil added: “It’s a family business – it makes me feel proud.”

Sadiq Khan made an appearance at the event – joining more than 800 other attendees – and the Mayor of London presented a number of awards to the winners.

The awards recognise the “huge successes” made by businesses in the industry, ensuring that key players are lauded for their achievements.

According to the Asian Curry Awards website: “Every restaurateur has a unique background and story.

“The awards focus not only on the achievements of today, but on a lifetime of work in the restaurant industry, honouring the dedication and commitment of people who have helped spread the love of curry throughout the UK, ensuring that the sector continues to be the vibrant and growing industry that it is today.”

Vegetarian Food Studio, on Penarth Road, is a hotspot for veggie and vegan food in the Welsh capital.

It first opened in 2004, offering vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food.

The award-winning Indian restaurant has picked up a number of gongs in its time – they’ve won around 15 awards over the past few years, according to the owners.

The other Welsh winner was Shampan Indian Cuisine, who are based in Cowbridge.

They picked up the accolade in the Welsh restaurant category.
