Welsh teams find it tough

FOUR teams from South East Wales travelled to Eastbourne last weekend to fish the two-day annual National Shore League event.

Over 150 anglers representi­ng teams from all over the country took part.

The first days fishing was manic with over 5,300 fish being caught ,mainly whiting.

Day two was a different story with flat calm seas and the fish numbers dropped dramatical­ly to 2300.

Although no teams from Wales came in the top five placings, Welsh individual team members came away with zone and super pool money.

On the second day, Dai Loder, fishing for the Gwent Don’t Know’s, picked up £40 for coming 10th in the super pool category and £40 for coming fourth in his zone.

Other zone prizes went to Joe Arch, fishing for last years winners Prime Angling, and he pocketed £60 for coming third in his zone.

Mike Mather, fishing for the Gwent Beer Bellies, also had a day two fourth place, winning him £40.

The overall team winners were Channel Anglers Deal from Kent. They walked away with the first prize of £2200.

The best East Region Shore league team was Channel Anglers 1 with seventh place netting them £250.

Last week saw the first in a series of

East Region WFSA midweek competitio­ns raising funds for the internatio­nal team taking place at St Brides.

A total of 25 anglers battled with atrocious weather conditions and the fish were hard to find.

Most of the anglers targeted conger eels which did not turn up on the night. Anglers targeting the smaller fish won the day.

Anthony Price, from Cardiff, won the match with two flounders for 0.57 kgs. Second spot went to Dave Evans with two whiting for 0.35kgs with a third place for Shane Ramsey also with two whiting for 0.31 kgs.

A total of £107 was raised for the manager fund. The next match will be at the end of the month. Further details to follow in next week’s column. Newport SAC fished their rover match last week, Dave Leader winning comfortabl­y when fishing at Marcross with a fine bag of conger eels and pouting for 12.72kgs.

Runner-up was Roy Tapper from the same venue with eight dogfish a codling and pouting for 4.37kg.

Third was Mark Wall with two conger eels for 1.78kg.

This week’s match is at St Brides on Sunday. Booking in at the Lighthouse pub car park by 2.15pm, fishing 3.15pm until 7.15pm.

Bargoed SAC travelled to Chesil for their monthly length match. Despite the horrendous journey down to the venue, a brilliant match took place.

Fishing was unbelievab­le, with double and treble shots of whiting every cast. In first place was Jason Ward with 63 fish for 1981cm. Runnerup was Phil Jehu with 57 fish for 1710cm and third spot went to 3rd Lloyd Summers with 48 fish for 1535cm.

This week’s Seaview Lads SAC match is at Sully and the Bendrick in the first leg of the Christmas competitio­ns and 11th leg of the doubles. Book in at 12.30am fishing until till 8.00pm then back to the Westend club for the weigh in by 9.30pm. Gwent SAC fished in conjunctio­n with the two-day event at Eastbourne.

Top spot went to Dai Loder with a mixed bag of whiting, pouting & flounder for 19lb 4ozs. Second was Mike Mather with 16lb 15ozs with third place going to Neil Owen with 16lb 11ozs.

This week’s match is a 12-hour rover booking at 8.00am at Rogerstone club return to the club by 8.00pm.

Penarth SAC Fished their local beach this week. First place went to Fred Chick, fishing at Lavanock point with 4lb 8 ozs consisting of two codling. Runner up fishing from the sewer was Colin Boagey with two codling for 3lb 12ozs. Third spot went to Calvin Parker fishing at the Ranny, with a conger eel and codling for 3lb 10z.

This week’s match is back on the pier and beach booking in from 1.30pm at the pier, fishing 2.30pm until 6.30pm. South Wales Sea Anglers SAC fish their monthly points competitio­n this coming Sunday over low water at Lavernock, Sully and the Bendricks.

Booking in commences at Cosmeston lakes carpark at 7.15am. Fishing times are 8.30am until 1.30pm. Then back at the Captain’s Wife pub by 2.30pm.
