walking towards his house and turned around to follow him.

Mr Roberts said: “There was a confrontation on the threshold.”

The court heard Griffiths shouted at Mr Jones to come downstairs, threatening he was going “to do him”.

Prosecutors said the defendant struck Mr Thomas twice on his forearm with the machete.

The police were called and Griffiths was later arrested at home.

He answered “no comment” to the questions put to him in his police interview.

He said he was having suicidal thoughts and was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital for a mental health assessment.

The court heard during the assessment on November 25, he repeatedly threatened to kill the people involved in the earlier incident.

Prosecutors said he had 87 previous offences on his record, including common assault, public disorder and theft.

Griffiths, 49, from Bryn Henllan in Blaenrhondda, admitted assault by beating, possessing a blade in a public place and making threats to kill.

Karl Williams, defending, stressed his client did not injure anyone.

He said Mr Jones was physically stronger and had bullied Griffiths, by taking food and other possessions from him.

The court heard he had taken 2g of amphetamine on the day of the incident.

Mr Williams said the defendant is currently receiving treatment for psychosis and “is suffering a degree of bullying” at HM Cardiff Prison.

Judge Daniel Williams jailed him for 18 months. He must serve half of that in custody before he can be released on licence.
