■On Friday January 3, the Penarth Aviation Society will be meeting in the Penarth Conservati­ve Club at 7:45pm for 8pm. The society welcomes local historian Alan Thorne back as guest speaker. He is casting his net over all of South Wales to talk about the airfields in the area and the part they played in both World Wars. The society meets on the first Friday of the month at the Penarth Conservati­ve Club. Visitors and potential members are welcome to attend a meeting, for a small donation, to sample the hospitalit­y. ■On Friday, January 3, at 10.30am, AWEN, Whitchurch Library Friends’ Group, will give children the chance to play board games at the library. All are welcome at this free event. As the library is to close temporaril­y on January 13 for refurbishm­ent, future events will be held at other venues.

■Conway 50+ next meet on Wednesday January 8. The club welcomes Gwenno Dafydd who is going to present the story of Edith Piaf in word and song. The 50+ group is held in the Conway Church Hall. The fully-accessible venue entrance is on Romilly Crescent, Cardiff CF11 9NT - Bus route 61. Entrance is £2 which includes tea/ coffee and biscuits. The hall is open from 10.15 and the session starts at 10.45 am. This is a community group run by volunteers. All welcome. See www.conwayroad­methodist.com.

■The next meeting of the Roath Local History Society is on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at St Andrew’s church hall, Penylan Road, Cardiff, CF24 3PB, when RLHS member Jeremy Sparkes unravels a family history trail concerning his greatuncle, 2nd Lt Vivian Llewellyn, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. A working-class lad from Cathays, he was killed in action just days before the Armistice.

Six months later a marble memorial was erected in his memory. The evening begins at 7.45pm with refreshmen­ts, and the talk beginning at 8pm.
