Toulon confirm Webb’s heading home to Wales

RHYS Webb will leave Toulon at the end of this season, opening the way for a return to Wales and international rugby.

The French club have agreed to his request to be released from the final twelve months of his three-year contract for family reasons and say he will head home to Wales.

He now looks likely to return to his former team, the Ospreys, where he spent more than a decade.

Webb has also been linked with the Dragons, but their director of rugby Dean Ryan today said the Wales and Lions scrum-half was not in talks with them.

Webb, who turned 31 earlier this month, has been finding life in France difficult, separated from his family.

Since February, he has been on his own in the Cote D’Azur, with his partner Delyth and their three sons Regan, eight, Jesse, four, and one-yearold Remi back in Wales.

Settling in France with the children proved difficult, so the decision was taken for mum and the boys to return home, while dad continued to ply his trade with Toulon.

Now he will be heading back home himself at the end of this season.

That would make the 31-cap No 9 available for Wales once more, potentially starting with next summer’s tour to New Zealand.

Controversially, he hasn’t been eligible for Test selection since joining Toulon, under the WRU 60-cap selection policy.

His last appearance for his country was against South Africa at the Principality Stadium in December 2017.

Confirming his impending departure from Toulon, he said: “I would like to thank the club for the hospitality and support it has given me since I joined last season.

“It has been and remains an honour to play for this great club.

“I loved all the time I spent here and I would especially like to thank my teammates, coaches, supporters and all those who are now for me as family and lifelong friends.

“It was difficult for me to be away from my family and my young children. Now I’m determined to give my best for the club until the end of the season and I hope we get the wins the club deserves.”

Webb has played 26 times for the French side.
