Passenger furious over ‘bra remark’

A FEMALE passenger who was rushing for a train at Cardiff Central says she was shocked to hear a guard tell her: “If you’re going to run, at least wear a sports bra.”

The woman from Pontypridd, who didn’t want to be named, was running late on Friday, January 30, and found herself having to dash across the station to catch her connection to Newport.

However, she claims that as she was running towards her platform, a member of staff made an inappropriate remark to her.

“I was travelling to Newport for a work event, and because of a signalling problem my train arrived into Cardiff Central station later than scheduled,” she said.

“This meant I only had a minute before my connecting train was due to depart, so I had to run across the concourse from platform eight to platform one.

“Whilst running through the station, an employee who works for Transport for Wales (TfW) said, ‘If you’re going to run, at least wear a sports bra’ as I passed him.

“The only way I was able to identify him as a staff member is because I saw the logo on his jacket – I was in too much of a rush to take in what he looked like.

“Had I more time, I’m the type of person who would have confronted him then and there.”

The woman contacted TfW via social media in order to complain and was told to private-message them her details so it could investigate.

However, two weeks have since gone by and she says she’s heard nothing from TfW since raising the issue with the rail company.

“They claim to have sent me a letter and now, a fortnight on, I still haven’t received a thing – despite being promised an update,” she said.

“It’s absolutely appalling customer service – TfW don’t seem to take sexual harassment seriously at all.”

Bethan Jelfs, customer delivery director for TfW Rail Services, said: “I was very disappointed to learn of this passenger’s experience at Cardiff Central station and we have been in contact with her.

“We will as always make sure that we gather all facts before we agree the next steps and a full investigation to the incident is already under way.”
