Why you might spot a Puma overhead...

-

People have been told not be alarmed if they see a military helicopter flying over South Wales this week.

Several people reported seeing the formidable looking aircraft in the skies above Cardiff yesterday.

South Wales Police revealed the reason why the chopper will be flying around this week - and said people shouldn’t be alarmed.

On Twitter, the force said that between Tuesday, February 25, and Thursday, February 27, they will be working alongside the military in a training exercise.

It said: “As a result you should expect to see a military Puma helicopter flying across and landing at a number of sites in South Wales.

“Please don’t be alarmed, this is part of our ongoing work to keep South Wales safe.

“If you see us, please give us a wave.”

When asked by one Twitter user to be more specific with landing locations the force said “unfortunately” they weren’t able to.

Other users reported seeing them fly over Barry yesterday, and one eyewitness saw two of the helicopters land at Hailey Park and then at Leckwith.

The RAF said the Puma aircraft is used in a variety of combat roles, including moving troops, weapons, ammunition and stores on the battlefield, as well as the extraction of casualties and in response to medical emergencies on the frontline.

It is also employed during non-combatant evacuations, and humanitarian and disaster relief operations.

The aircraft is capable of carrying 16 passengers, 12 fully equipped troops or up to two tonnes of freight.
