‘What an epic weekend of community spirit’

-

THEY’RE the pictures that show just what a community can do when it comes together.

Two different clean-ups were held at Bute Park in Cardiff over the weekend to help restore the park to its former glory.

On Saturday, scores of volunteers turned up to clear the park of debris from recent storms, all braving the blustery weather.

And on Sunday, more than 130 people came together to help clear up the river and park.

The volunteers gathered everything from waste plastic to tyres, traffic cones, drainpipes and litter.

A number of clean ups are being planned by volunteer organisation Cardiff Rivers Group – the first on Sunday covered the area around Blackweir, Pontcanna Fields and the area around Bute Park.

Sharing images on its Instagram feed, Secret Garden café, which is in the city park, said: “What an epic weekend of community spirit, kindness and a ‘let’s get things done’ attitude. On Saturday over 100 people joined the rangers for a clean up session in the South area of Bute Park, and on Sunday over 130 people joined Cardiff Rivers Group to clean up the area around Blackweir bridge.

“It’s made a huge difference, with massive amounts of rubbish cleared, collected and bagged up.

“It was sad to see the amount of litter thrown up onto the park.

“The most devastating and worrying is the soft fibrous, plastic material that’s stuck into everything. It’s baby wipes, face wipes, shredded plastic bags, sanitary waste, thin plastic wire, soft toy filler, netting and more.”

Cardiff Rivers Group is organising other clean-up events. The next is tomorrow and will cover Hamadryad Park.
