BEST OF THE REST
BACK IN TIME FOR THE CORNER SHOP
BBC2, 8pm
IN a novel way of looking at history, this series sees a family go back in time.
There’s no Delorean or Tardis, just a few costumes, plus the magic of the BBC props department to help our imagination.
The Ardern family will fast forward through more than 100 years of shopkeeping, from sacks of flour, to tins of Spam and pick and mix sweets, phone cards and National Lottery tickets.
It’s fascinating to look back at the British institution – the corner shop was started to solve the problem of feeding people in urban areas, but even now we can’t do without them.
Sara Cox presents, while social historian Polly Russell provides context and facts, as the family of five get stuck in.
Starting in the Victorian era they’ll need to bake their own goods, weigh and measure loose products and make deliveries with a horse and cart.
And all while buttoned up in Victorian clothes… it proves hot work.
CRAZY DELICIOUS
Channel 4, 8pm
YOUR dinner might seem particularly boring after watching this show. It sees creative cheffing types think up extraordinary ways to put a twist on their food.
Heston Blumenthal may be a man who thinks snail porridge is an acceptable meal, but you can’t argue that his vision and originality is second to none.
He is the show’s self-proclaimed God of Food, aka a judge, alongside Niklas Ekstedt and Carla Hall, as the hopefuls compete for the prize of a Golden Apple.
And tonight is the final, with Tiffany, Tony and Romy battling to impress the Food Gods.
First, they must make mushrooms the star of a brand-new dish, before pushing themselves to the limit by re-inventing the cheese toastie.
Only two cooks can progress to the final round where they go head-to-head to produce a unique twist on a takeaway meal.
And let’s just say, it’s unlikely to be a bog standard pizza or bucket of chicken…
