Giggs: It was either me or Becks going to leave Utd
MANCHESTER United legend Ryan Giggs has broken his silence on the one time he almost made a transfer move away from Old Trafford.
The wide man was chatting with old enemies Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness on Sky Sports’ Football Show.
Giggs, on the show via webcam from home, reminisced about some of his biggest United moments, including the time he almost secured a controversial move away to one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Back in 2003, the Welshman was linked with a shock move to Italy to join Fabio Cannavaro and Adriano at Inter Milan.
The move, obviously, never came to fruition but Giggs has revealed that he was made aware that it would either be him or teammate David Beckham who departed that summer, with Beckham leaving for Real Madrid and going on to become one of the biggest stars in world football.
“As a footballer, you always wanted a real challenge,” he explained.
“At the start of every season, I thought there was a challenge. Whether it was defending the league, winning the league back or targeting the Champions League. There was always a challenge.
“Around 2003, the summer that David Beckham left, there was talk of me going to join Inter Milan.
“I never heard anything from them personally, but I didn’t have the greatest start to that season,” he continued.
“I ended up doing okay that season, but there was serious talk of one of us going and it was either me or David [Beckham].
“He ended up leaving. That was the closest I ever got to leaving Old Trafford.”
He added: “I never wanted to leave. I always wanted that challenge every year and I loved playing for Manchester United.”
