Quick-thinking officer saves bus driver’s life

-

A QUICK-THINKING police officer saved the life of a bus driver having a heart attack at the wheel.

PC Darren Westall came to the rescue when he was flagged down while on lockdown patrol.

The bus driver, 51, had pulled over with chest pains and was suffering a “very large heart attack”.

PC Westall used a defibrillator brought by his colleagues when the driver collapsed on the floor of the bus.

The three police officers restarted his heart and he immediately regained consciousness and started breathing again.

PC Westall, PC Roberts and PC Frost, of South Wales Police, have now been hailed as heroes.

The driver was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, following his heart attack in Barry.

Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust arrived said the driver from Bridgend was suffering a very large heart attack and underwent surgery.

Chief inspector Tony Williams, of South Wales Police, said: “The officers quick thinking and the defibrillator have ultimately saved this gentleman’s life.

“Despite the current climate, our officers remain on the front line, responding to spontaneous incidents, serving communities and doing their very best to keep everyone safe.

“It is pleasing to know we have officers like PC Westall, Roberts and Frost among our ranks.

“Without their calm and quick-thinking actions, professionalism and bravery, the outcome for the bus driver man and his loved ones could have been very different. I am very proud of their actions and we wish the gentleman a full and speedy recovery.”
