ONE of Welsh rugby’s most popular overseas imports, Maama Molitika, has finally hung up his boots at the age of 45.

The Tongan international backrow forward has decided to retire from playing after a career spanning more than 20 seasons.

He had spells with Bridgend, the Celtic Warriors and Cardiff Blues, winning the Welsh Premiership with Bridgend and both the AngloWelsh Cup and European Challenge Cup with Cardiff Blues.

He also played for Harlequins and spent a year in Japan, having started out with the Fraser Tech club in New Zealand, while he has been with Paul Turner’s Ampthill for the last seven seasons, helping them rise up to the Championship.

But the 18-cap flanker, who made 112 appearances for Cardiff Blues, has remained based in Wales, living in Rhoose and working as a fitness instructor in Barry.

Announcing his retirement, he said: “My professional rugby career has spanned over 21 years and I am lucky to have experienced all the things I have.

“From playing for my country at international level to being selected for the Barbarians, through to playing for each and every club I have.

“I am now moving onto the next chapter which will hopefully include me staying within the game and allowing me to coach others using my experience and knowledge.”

Former Welsh international Turner commented: “Thanks Maama for your huge contribution to Ampthill Rugby.

“You will remain as one of the key figures in our great climb up the leagues into the Championship.

“Both your on-field performances and your off-field manner have been outstanding. All the very best in your retirement from the game.

Great man, great player.”
