Warning as parties and gatherings reported

-

A “NUMBER of incidents of public gatherings” have been reported in a part of Wales with one of the highest rates of coronavirus.

The problem with some “unacceptable behaviour” during lockdown has been highlighted in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT).

The local authority area, which spans a large swathe of the South Wales Valleys, has recorded more than 1,100 confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Less than a week ago we reported how RCT was also one of the areas that has had the most cases of coronavirus relative to population.

Despite this, a minority of people still seem to be ignoring the rules and failing to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Andrew Morgan, leader of RCT Council, has said he can understand how, with time, people are becoming agitated – but he urged people to stay home and stick to the rules.

In a recent statement, Councillor Morgan said: “As we now enter the seventh week of lockdown, I appreciate that many people are becoming frustrated with the situation and want to return to normality, however, the social restrictions are still in place to slow the spread and save lives as the virus remains a very real threat to our communities – and this is evidenced by Rhondda Cynon Taf having over 1,140 confirmed cases.

“Unfortunately, we are aware of a number of incidents of public gatherings recently, and I would like to remind residents that this is not acceptable behaviour.

“The council is continuing to work closely with South Wales Police in order to ensure that the public are staying at home to help prevent the spread of the virus, with the only exceptions being essential travel to collect medical supplies or essential shopping, travelling to and from work and their allocated daily exercise each day.”

He added: “We also continue to urge all of our residents to adhere to the strict social distancing guidance at all times whenever they do go outdoors.

“The message is simple – Stay Home. Protect The NHS. Save Lives.”

On the weekend South Wales Police confirmed that, despite strict rules still being in place, officers had been alerted to various incidents where they said guidelines were clearly not being followed.

These incidents included groups flocking to open spaces to sunbathe, play football and enjoy picnics.

There were also a number of house parties, barbecues and large family gatherings.
