Ex-councillor and MP’s dad remembered as ‘larger than life’ character

The
77-year-old, who ran a warehousing and transport business before he became a councillor, had recently had cancer and died at his home near Duffryn on June 11 with his family around him.
His son, Monmouth MP David TC Davies, said his father would be remembered as a “larger than life character” who was fond of long lunches.
“He had been quite unwell for some time but he didn’t let it keep him down,” Mr Davies said.
“He was told in March basically that he only had a day or two left, and they stopped all his medication.
“He proceeded to spend the next six weeks living on a diet of Haagen-Dazs ice cream and the odd glass of champagne.
“I think he did quite well in the end. He certainly fought a good fight. We all miss him a lot.”
Peter HC Davies won his seat in the Stow Hill ward in 1999, and also served in the city’s cabinet during his time as a councillor.
He also set up his own successful warehousing and transport business called Burrow Heath in the mid 1980s after being made redundant.
“St David’s Foundation are the most extraordinary bunch of people,” David Davies said.
“They made it possible for dad to spend his last couple of months at home where in other circumstances he would have been taken into a hospice or a hospital and we wouldn’t have seen him.
“Those people made sure he was able to stay at home and he died at home with his family around him.”
Councillor Matthew Evans said: “It is very sad news. Peter was a longstanding councillor. He was one of the first to introduce me to politics and he was a huge character.”
Labour councillor Miqdad Al-Nuaimi ran against Peter Davies in the Stow Hill ward before serving alongside him as councillor from 2004 to 2008.
Writing on Twitter, Mr Al-Nuaimi said: “Very sorry to hear this sad news about Peter.”
Arrangements are being made for a small private funeral.
