Cult 90s film set for drive-in screening to mark 21st anniversary
IT’S the cult Welsh dance movie shot in Cardiff which this year celebrates its 21st anniversary.
Now Human Traffic is to be screened in its most unusual setting – as part of a socially distanced drive-in movie event at Splott Market next weekend featuring a number of prominent Welsh DJs.
Wales’ longest running club night, Time Flies, has joined forces with street food cinema events organiser Street Street Food Cinema UK to bring the much-loved dance film to the big screen this Saturday.
The event, which can accommodate 100 cars, will feature Time Flies DJs as well as a range of food from local street food vendors such as Dirty Bird Fried Chicken, Frank’s Hot Dogs, Joe’s Ice Cream, and Blakes Popcorn.
For Time Flies promoter Henry Blunt it’s an opportunity to be part of a live event this year after lockdown forced him to cancel the plans he had for Time Flies this summer.
“People are desperate for something to do,” said Henry. “We had all sorts of plans for this year and still do have.
“We were going to do something in June and obviously that got shelved. There are drive-in events going on with dance brands such as Cream. These are the sorts of events you can get a licence for because of the whole social distancing issue.
“In terms of what one perceives to be a traditional Time Flies, I’d say that’s still a couple of months off.
“We hope to announce something for the autumn soon. Failing that, until (Cardiff venue) the Tramshed is given the green light for the events we’ve been doing there recently we’re waiting on theirs and the government’s sayso. There’s nothing else we can do.
“The whole clue about dance music is in the name. Dancing, letting off steam and having a great laugh in a room packed full of people.
“Drive-in could be the way forward for the future unless things change dramatically with vaccines,” he added. “The trouble is we just don’t know at the moment. If you’re not able to have football crowds you’re not able to have busy venue crowds.
“We wouldn’t want to do an event unless it was entirely safe. How awful would it be if there was a Covid outbreak at a Time Flies event.”
Human Traffic is one of a series of film screenings to be staged by Street Food Cinema UK at Splott Market every weekend during August, many of which have already sold out due to the huge popularity of the drive-in concept.
Screenings include classic movies such as Back To The Future, Grease, Twin Town and Pulp Fiction, as well as family films like Sing and The Lion King.
