The wrong site for Velindre scheme

-

MR VAUGHAN Gething says he “will make a decision” on the proposed Velindre development at Cardiff’s Northern Meadows in the new year after taking advice.

It is time that politicians took control of this development. Every single local politician opposes building on the meadows. Just why does Velindre NHS Trust want planning permission to build houses? Politicians

have asked for a full Senedd discussion and the Senedd’s own petitions committee has questions as well.

Nuffield Health has been commissioned, by Velindre NHS Trust themselves, to provide a report in just a few short weeks but it will not be “a wholescale independent review of the project” and it will not “offer a verdict on plans to reconfigure cancer services” nor offer a “view on ... issues such as environmental concerns, inequalities impact or financial or cost considerations”.

Mr Gething will not get much help from this rushed review, bought by Velindre, because these are the basic issues that need to be considered.

Mr Gething should insist that work on this much-opposed project is paused until he makes his decision.

Politicians in Jersey have scrapped plans to rebuild the island’s main hospital following the complete loss of public confidence and opposition bravely expressed by consultants and other staff. It sounds very much

like the Northern Meadows.

Mr Gething has a duty to do the right thing in Cardiff North. The Velindre project needs to be redirected to another site. It needs to be realigned in view of the wishes of consultants and staff, local politicians and the community as well as the environmental needs of our climate crisis. Let’s really review this project.

Steffan Webb, Chair Plaid Cymru Cardiff North
