De Bruyne suffers penalty woe as Reds claim a draw

-

GABRIEL Jesus cancelled out a Mohamed Salah penalty but Kevin de Bruyne missed a spotkick as heavyweights Manchester City and Liverpool played out an entertaining 1-1 draw.

The champions, fielding a fourman attack, took an early lead in a gripping Premier League contest at the Etihad Stadium when Salah struck after a foul by Kyle Walker on Sadio Mane.

City responded with a fine goal from fit-again Jesus, but de Bruyne spurned the chance to put them ahead when he fired wide from 12 yards before the break.

Both sides had opportunities in the second half but neither could break through, meaning Liverpool dropped from first to third over the course of the weekend while City remained in mid-table.

Jamie Vardy fired Leicester to a gritty 1-0 win over Wolves.

The striker’s early penalty made it three straight victories for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The Premier League’s joint eight-goal top scorer was also denied a second from the spot by Rui Patricio’s save.

The Foxes now go to Liverpool on Saturday, having already won at Manchester City, in the latest test of their title credentials.

Harry Kane struck his 150th Premier League goal two minutes from time as Tottenham beat West Brom 1-0.

Kane headed home his landmark effort as Spurs continued their 100 per cent away record this season.

It was his 201st goal for Spurs and his 13th of the campaign.

Kane’s header from Matt Doherty’s cross settled a tight game at the Hawthorns, where Spurs – despite starting Kane, Gareth Bale and Son Heung-min in attack – struggled to dominate.

Bruno Fernandes’ double eased the pressure on boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United got back to winning ways by beating Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park.

Following their defeat against Istanbul Basaksehir in midweek, it looked like the visitors were heading for more negative headlines when Everton took the lead after 19 minutes through Bernard.

But United equalised five minutes later when Fernandes headed home from Luke Shaw’s cross for his fifth goal of the season. Then United went ahead as Fernandes’s lofted cross towards Marcus Rashford dropped into the bottom corner.

Edinson Cavani scored his first goal for the club in the final minute of added time.

Ebere Eze helped Crystal Palace secure an excellent 4-1 win over Leeds in a feisty encounter at Selhurst Park.

The attacker assisted Scott Dann’s first goal since December 2017 before he got off the mark for his new club with a wonderful free-kick.

Helder Costa’s own-goal and Jordan Ayew’s late strike capped a fantastic afternoon for Roy Hodgson.

Patrick Bamford did pull one back for Leeds and had another ruled out for offside.

Chelsea came from behind to beat bottom club Sheffield United 4-1 at Stamford Bridge and move third in the table.

David McGoldrick had put the Blades in front after just nine minutes.

Chelsea were level in the 23rd minute when Tammy Abraham converted a cut-back from Mateo Kovacic, before goals from Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Timo Werner completed the comeback.

Ademola Lookman fluffed a Panenka-style penalty with the last kick of the match as Tomas Soucek’s stoppage-time goal earned West Ham a 1-0 victory over Fulham.

The match exploded into life in stoppage time when Soucek finished clinically.

Said Benrahma was then adjudged to have tripped Tom Cairney in the penalty area. But with the last kick of the game, Lookman chipped his penalty into the arms of Lukasz Fabianski.

It was such an awful effort that Fabianski, who had begun to dive to his right, actually had time to get back up and make the save.
