A DISPUTE over drugs led to a man pulling out a meat cleaver and brandishing it towards two brothers armed with a baseball bat and machete.

Mathew Davies, 35, from Rhymney, attended the address of Ralph and Simon Davies in Aberbargoed, Caerphilly, armed with the cleaver after falling out with the former.

Shortly before 9pm on May 9 last year Davies approached a window of the address and was seen on CCTV slashing through the window with the cleaver after being punched.

He walked into the block of flats in Commercial Street before walking down the hallway to the address of the Davies brothers.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday heard that when the door of the flat opened the brothers were stood there holding a baseball bat and machete between them.

This caused the defendant to raise the meat cleaver but he then went back to the entrance of the block of flats before shutting the window on someone’s hand.

The police were called and attended Davies’ home in Aneurin Terrace where he was arrested. Officers found the meat cleaver in the kitchen sink.

The defendant later pleaded guilty to affray and possession of a blade in a public place.

Defence barrister Jeffrey Jones told the court his client suffered with mental health issues and there had been an element of provocation in his offending.

Sentencing Davies, Recorder Sean Bradley said: “Having this knife in a public place was very dangerous and a very serious error of judgement by you.

“Fortunately it didn’t cause any serious injury and the impact of was limited.

“You had the good sense to leave and not let this escalate.”

Davies was sentenced to a 20-month community order and was ordered to carry out a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

He was also made subject to an electronic curfew that will last for two months. it
