Book to browse as libraries reopen after a year

LIBRARIES and hubs in Cardiff have reopened for browsing books for the first time in more than a year.

Members of libraries across the city can now browse bookshelves, but only after booking a slot.

Each slot is limited to 25 minutes to view and choose which books to borrow.

Libraries have not been fully open since March last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. However from last June, members were able to borrow books by ordering them online or over the phone. Ebooks and newspapers were also available to read online.

Libraries and hubs will have “enhanced cleaning measures” as well as one-way systems inside to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

A council spokesman said: “Cardiff hubs and libraries have maintained a service for library members throughout the past year - initially by investing more in our digital offer and encouraging customers to try out our wide range of e-resources which has been really successful and popular, and then with the launch of our clickand-collect book service.

“We know though that for some customers there is no substitute for browsing the shelves at their local library or hub and choosing the titles they want to borrow that way.

“This is another step forward in our recovery plan and we look forward to seeing customers in our buildings for their pre-booked slots from next week.”

To book a slot, visitors should ring Cardiff council’s library line on 029 2087 1071. Visitors should go to the library alone, unless with a child or a carer, and should wear a face covering and use hand sanitiser on arriving. More information and opening times can be found on cardiff.gov.uk/hubs.
