Your Echo is named daily newspaper of the year

THE South Wales Echo has been named daily newspaper of the year at this year’s Wales Media Awards.

The recognitio­n was part of a successful night for the Echo’s publisher, Media Wales.

At the latest running of the annual event, hosted online on Friday night by TV presenters Lucy Owen and Jonathan Hill, Media Wales scooped a clutch of awards.

Marcus Hughes was named Newspaper Journalist of the Year, Will Hayward was named Political Journalist of the Year, Estel Farell-Roig won Feature Writer of the Year, Ben James won Young Journalist of the Year, Jonathan Myers won Photograph­er of the Year and Lynne Barrett-Lee was named Columnist of the Year.

The Echo was named Daily/ Sunday Newspaper of the Year with judges praising “an informativ­e and entertaini­ng package for its readers”, while our sister paper, the Western Mail, won Magazine of the Year for its Weekend magazine. Dylan Iorwerth – who also writes a column for the Western Mail – was presented with the Outstandin­g Contributi­on Award.

The event is run in support of the Journalist­s’ Charity.

Echo editor Tryst Williams said: “This is great recognitio­n for the brilliant work our team produces every day to bring you the Echo.

Media Wales’ success at these awards is testament to the profession­alism and excellence displayed at every level of our news team.”
