Before going outside, check the UV index. An index of three or above means there is a risk of sunburn for fairer skin tones, and eight or above means there’s high risk of sunburn.

“The sun is strongest in the middle of the day. It can be helpful to remember that you are more likely to burn when your shadow is shorter than you,” adds Dr Pastides. Use an SPF of at least 30, and UVA protection too.
