Dom wants more goals

-

DOM Telford is hoping his tap-in against Scunthorpe last week is going to lead to a string of goals to take Newport County into the play-off places in League 2 – starting with a win over Bradford City at Rodney Parade today.

The 24-year-old striker joined the Exiles in the January transfer window to join forces with his old Bury team mate Nicky Maynard, but their partnership never delivered the goals that Michael Flynn was hoping for.

Telford scored once in 15 outings last season and became a fringe player under Flynn. It led to him wondering about his future.

“I was out of favour and so I just got my head down and worked even harder,” he said.

“I’m hoping it is the start of a decent run for both me and the team.

“I got on really well with Michael Flynn, even though it might not have looked that way for someone looking in from the outside. I’m quite a straight forward guy and he was the same with me.

“We always had mutual respect and it is the same between me and Wayne Hatswell. I came here to play games and score goals – that’s all I wanted to do.

“I wasn’t out of favour at Plymouth Argyle, but I wasn’t going to be playing every week. I wanted to go somewhere where I thought I would have the opportunity of playing regularly.

“That was my aim last season and the goal hasn’t changed. It was a tough couple of months last season, but I got myself together in the summer when it was sink or swim.”

The double act of Telford and Courtney Baker-Richardson up front in the 3-0 home win over Scunthorpe last weekend gave Hatswell a winning start as interim manger following the shock departure of Flynn and that same ‘little and large’ combination looks set to be given another run against Bradford.
