Woman’s three-hour ambulance wait

AN ELDERLY woman who was left injured in the street after being knocked over by a metal fence waited more than three hours for an ambulance.

The woman sustained a leg and head injury after being hit by a metal fence that had blown down by the wind in Cardiff.

The incident happened on Heathwood Road, near Rhydypenau crossroads in Cyncoed, just after 11am yesterday.

The road was closed for several hours by South Wales Police while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Eyewitness­es at the scene said the injured woman was left waiting more than three hours for an ambulance to attend.

South Wales Ambulance Service said they are under “welldocume­nted extreme pressure at the moment” and apologised for the delay.

The fire service also attended the incident.

The road was closed just after 11am until around 3.45pm.

South Wales was battered by heavy rain and high winds yesterday morning as a yellow weather warning for thunder was placed on large parts of the country.

Natural Resources Wales had four flood warnings and eight flood alerts in place and part of the M4 was closed due to flooding.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokespers­on said: “We were called on Wednesday at approximat­ely 11am to reports of a person needing urgent medical attention after the fall of a metal fence on Heathwood Road, Cardiff.

“We responded with one emergency ambulance.

“One patient was transporte­d to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

“Our service is under welldocume­nted extreme pressure at the moment, and we apologise for any delay in our response.”

A South Wales Police spokespers­on said: “Police were called to Heathwood Road, Cardiff, at 11.05am to a report of an elderly woman being knocked over by a fence blown in the wind.

“The woman had a leg and head injury as a result of the incident.”
