Will students be top of the class for Aber test?

- With Mark Jones Cymru Premier

AFTER a successful week for Rob Page’s national team, it’s back to domestic football this weekend and in the JD Cymru Premier League the action kicks off tonight at Cardiff Mets Cyncoed campus where Christian Edwards and his students host Aberystwyth Town.

It will surely be a contest of teams with contrasting fortunes at the moment.

The Mets’ last couple of fixtures have seen them suffer a 5-0 defeat at TNS and a 0-1 home defeat against Caernarfon while the visitors Aber have had a resurgence in their results, including a 1-1 draw against Barry at Jenner Park followed by an amazing 1-0 home win over top of the league TNS.

In fact, John Owens goal for the mid Walians meant it was defeat for TNS for the first time in the league.

The league positions of the two clubs definitely make this game a sixpointer, even at this stage of the season.

The students are just two points clear of Antonio Corbiseno’s bottom two visitors, who surely see this as a must-win game to stay away from the relegation area, while Aber will look for the away win to make it seven points from nine to keep up their recent revival in their league form.

Barry Town’s last two fixtures against Aberystwyth and Haverfordwest have both finished 1-1 and produced two points out of six.

Gavin Chesterfield would have wanted and expected more against two teams from the bottom six, so tomorrow he will surely want a win against bottom of the table Cefn Druids.

The Wrexham-based visitors are still winless after thirteen games and have secured just two draws to date this season, but still have a group of decent players, especially their wide

men Josef Faux and Emmanuel Agyemang. Kayne McLaggon has produced a purple patch of goals of late for the Linnetts and will expect to add to his ten goals so far this season.

A win is expected for Barry and could be crucial with their next two league encounters being against Newtown and TNS.

Fourth in the table Penybont travel north to play a back-to-form Connah’s Quay Nomads tomorrow at their Deeside Stadium.

Craig Harrison’s Nomads who are the defending champions and seem to be getting back to winning ways after an unsteady period after the departure of their title winning manager Andy Morrison.

Penybont climbed as high as fourth after a smart 2-1 win against Cardiff Met a fortnight ago, when Mael Davies and Louis Harling were on target for Rhys Griffiths team.

A point tomorrow would be a good return for Penybont against a team still looking to finish in an automatic European slot come the end of season.

In the Cymru South, league leaders Pontypridd Town travel to Afan Lido this evening and will be hoping to keep their unbeaten fourteen game run going.

Apart from two cup defeats against Cymru Premier opposition, Jonathan Jones’ team are just starting to edge favouritism for the title and will expect to pick up the points on offer at the Lido.

Second placed Llantwit Major are also in Friday night action when they travel to Briton Ferry in a second against third clash.

Tomorrow there is a local derby in prospect as Cambrian and Clydach host Taffs Well in the Rhondda.

In the South Wales Alliance League, Canton Liberal travel to Garw, Bridgend Street go to Merthyr Saints and

Llanrumney United visit Porthcawl Town.

In the Ardal South West League

,Dinas Powys visit AFC Llwydcoed, Caerau Ely host West End and Cardiff Draconians host Treharris Athletic
