Mackintosh close the gap at the top of table

MACKINTOSH Sports closed the gap on Fairwater Cons at the top of the Cardiff & District Snooker League (sponsored by Trecenydd Snooker Club) this week with a 5-0 win at home to in-form Cathays Cons.

Darren Gill’s side had gone into the match unbeaten after victories in their first two games, but the very strong opening duo of Jason Hewett and Alan Hurley gave Mackintosh a 2-0 lead before wins for Clive Marsh, Ronnie Allen and Brian Rees sealed an emphatic victory for last season’s runners-up.

Fairwater are one point clear in first place after their maintained their unbeaten start to the season but they were pushed all the way by newlyamalgamated Cuesaders Z, who produced the individual highlight of the week with a superb win for Ryan Bowgen against Alan Morgan to take the first frame, and it looked like they might make it 2-0 when Paul Chichester opened up a lead on Ben Griffiths, but last year’s Cardiff Handicap Singles champion fought back to clinch the frame on the pink and level proceedings at 1-1.

Steffan Davies then made it 2-1 before Cuesaders Z regained parity with a win for captain Graeme Prance over Shaun O’Connell to take the match to a decider, which was comfortably won by Steve Flanagan to give his side a hard-fought 3-2 win.

Canton Libs made it back-to-back wins to move them up to fourth in the table with a 3-2 win against Mackintosh Snooker with wins for Luke Haines, Declan O’Callaghan and James Wigmore, whilst Trecenydd Snooker beat Savoy by the same scoreline. Taff’s Well registered their first win of the season after a 4-1 home win over RBL Warriors.

Nick Jones got them off to a solid start with victory in the opener against Chris Johnson, before some brilliant potting on the colours from Mike Watts levelled the scores. Wins for James Llewellyn and Kevin Brown ensured Taff’s Well had the win before Rob Hayes maintained his unbeaten start with a win over Simon Takata to seal a 4-1 win for Tom Cross’s side.
