Ponty hit the goal trail as they claim sweet revenge

-

PONTYPRIDD Town rocketed back to the top of JD Cymru South on the back of an 8-1 revenge win over Afan Lido.

A week earlier they had lost their unbeaten record to the visitors in a 3-2 defeat that saw them have two players sent off and miss a penalty.

Seven days later there were no mishaps, other than conceding the first goal to Jordan Edwards from the penalty spot.

Then came an almighty backlash that saw the home side score eight unanswered goals. Gavin Beddard and Sam Johnson made it 2-1 at the break and then came an avalanche.

Five flowed in a 12-minute period midway through the second half. Johnson got his second, Drew Fahiya scored twice and Aiden Lewis and Jordan Knott also got in on the act.

There was one more to follow in the 89th minute from Paul Morgan.

Luke Bowen blew the title race wide open with a 23rd-minute winner for Briton Ferry Llansawel that knocked Llantwit Major off the top.

Bowen’s early strike at Windmill Lane allowed his side to avenge the 4-3 defeat they suffered at home against the same side seven days earlier.

Ferry are two points adrift of Llantwit in third.

Port Talbot Town fell to their 15th straight defeat, beaten 2-0 at home by Swansea University, while two goals in as many minutes in the second half steered Cwmbran Celtic to a 4-3 win at Undy Athletic.

Cwmbran opened up with goals from Tyler Broom and Tom Meechan, but by the break Undy were back on terms thanks to strikes from Gareth Cullimore and Gyles Thompson.

The home side went ahead in the 57th minute with Cullimore’s second.

Andrew Larcombe and Jordan Meaney scored in quick succession to edge Cwmbran ahead. Undy had Tom Wright sent off in the 78th minute for a second bookable offence.

In JD Cymru North, unbeaten Guilsfield fell further behind league leaders Airbus UK Broughton as they drew 0-0 with Llandudno.

Guilsfield’s Adam Jenkins was sent off in the 32nd minute and Llandudno’s Morgan Owen followed him to the sidelines.

The Wingmakers’ 2-1 win at Holyhead Hotspur – thanks to secondhalf goals from Oli Lanceley and Ryan Edwards – saw them stretch their lead over second-placed Llandudno to seven points.
