Mary wins £200 with name for new care home

-

A CARDIFF resident has won a competition to help name a new care home in the city.

Mary Hawkins took part in the competition to name the new Care UK home on Ty Draw Road, which will open in the autumn of 2023.

The competition called for the people who know the area best, its residents, to share suggestions that had a cultural or historical reference to the town.

Mary came up with the winning name, “Llys Herbert”, named after the Welsh Herbert family, who in the 16th century became the most powerful family in Cardiff.

The family is known for bringing stability to the city after many years of fighting between the English and the Welsh.

Mary said: “I’m delighted to have inspired the name of the new Care UK home, and am thrilled that it encompasses the history of the area.

“The Herbert family restored Cardiff in the 16th century, Henry Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, began the restoration of Cardiff Castle, as well as bringing stability to the city, which is why I thought Llys Herbert would make the perfect name.”

As a reward for coming up with the winning name, Care UK has donated £200 to Mary.

Joshua Jones, construction project manager for Care UK, said: “The hom- naming process is one of the key milestones for a new home, so it was important to involve the community in the decision.

“All of the names put forward were of a very high quality, but we felt ‘Llys Herbert’ really rooted the home in the local area.

“We’re so grateful to everyone that made a name suggestion, and to Mary for helping select the home’s name – we are very much looking forward to the home taking shape and opening with its name of Llys Herbert in 2023.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, the new Care UK home will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities.

The layout of the building will be configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
